For a recent web design project I was looking for a list of UK counties. No problem, I thought, the internet is a wonderful place, bound to find something.
How wrong can you be? Lots of lists, but none of them complete and most out of date. Spent far too long looking and eventually had to make my own. I think it’s pretty complete, though, as ever, you probably know better.
I’ve added a text file with just each County name that you can use as you like. You can list UK Counties in your browser or download the UK Counties file.
Please let me know what you think or if there are any missing by adding a comment. I promise I’ll be grateful and will add any missing counties.
Finally if you make use of the list, feel free to link back to this page http://www.imaker.co.uk/blog/list-of-uk-counties/

Thanks for putting these up, it’s the most complete list I’ve found.
I’ll let you know if I find any mistakes.

Excellent!
I do find it disappointing that the internet with vast amounts of info yet most of it can be totally useless and inconsistent but it’s great to see that there is a bit of update to date content on this site…
Many thanks, solved a problem with minimal effort.
Rob.

Londonderry?

A very useful list, thanks

Great list, I will use it on my directory. Had a hard time finding a good proper list.

Good list – best I’ve seen so far, but as the Government keep moving things around, Linolcshire’s northern area that was known as Lindsey became South Humberside. Humberside thankfully was kicked out again but Lincolnshire was split, so we now also have North Lincolnshire and if I’m not mistaken, North East Lincolnshire.
I love the way that Yorkshire is now split into 4 Ridings from the original 3 – when “Riding” is an old word meaning “A Third” (1/3)
Keep up the good work.

Thanks Tim, appreciate your comment, but I’ve no idea whether you mean the list should be updated.

Strathclyde does not exist any more. North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire and other counties now exist.

Thanks, really helpful.
Strathclyde now removed and the following added to the list:
Argyll and Bute

East Dunbartonshire
East Renfrewshire
Glasgow City (created as Glasgow)
Inverclyde
North Ayrshire
North Lanarkshire
Renfrewshire
South Ayrshire
South Lanarkshire
Dumbarton and Clydebank

Thanks for the list
Northern Ireland is officially part of the UK. There are 6 counties as follows:
Antrim
Armagh
Down
Fermanagh
Londonderry
Tyrone

Thanks Mark, appreciate you taking the trouble, but I believe you will find them already listed under the “full title” of County Antrim, County Armagh, etc.

Many thanks for this
I too, am surprised how difficult it is to find a definitive list.
Can anybody clarify if Middlesex is a county? I seems to be left of a lot of lists.
Cheers,
John
29 October, 2010 at 2:28 pm
Hi John
Middlesex isn’t a county any longer but falls within Greater London. However it is still used in postal addresses – so it’s back in the list!
Thanks for asking
4 November, 2010 at 2:35 pm
Brilliant! Thank you very much, exactly what I was looking for!
11 November, 2010 at 7:55 am
Sorry – but you’ve missed County Fermanagh … you know… the SIX counties of Northern Ireland {:0)
11 November, 2010 at 8:07 am
Further to my last comment – I know that County Fermanagh was noted in another comment BUT it wasn’t in the file under ‘County Fermanagh’ – I’ve just noticed that is is in the file but listed as ‘Fermanagh’ – it needs to be listed with the other 5 counties as ‘County Fermanagh’.
Sorry to be picky!

Highly appreciated

Thanks for the thought Noel.
Most of those in the list are already included in the main counties list but I’m not quite sure if the missing few are used as counties in postal addresses so i haven’t added them.

Many thanks for creating this list, saved a lot of hunting around on the post office website to get it.

Spot on. The internet is full of sites listing the states of the USA but not the UK Counties. Someone asked me if I could name the States of the USA. Personally, as a UK citizen I would have thought we should be able to list the UK counties more readily. With your kind assistance I soon will be able to.

Thanks for the list – just what I wanted – perfect – no fuss service.
