List of UK Counties

For a recent web design project I was looking for a list of UK counties. No problem, I thought, the internet is a wonderful place, bound to find something.

How wrong can you be? Lots of lists, but none of them complete and most out of date. Spent far too long looking and eventually had to make my own. I think it’s pretty complete, though, as ever, you probably know better.

I’ve added a text file with just each County name that you can use as you like. You can list UK Counties in your browser or download the UK Counties file.

Please let me know what you think or if there are any missing by adding a comment. I promise I’ll be grateful and will add any missing counties.

Finally if you make use of the list, feel free to link back to this page http://www.imaker.co.uk/blog/list-of-uk-counties/

  1. Thanks for putting these up, it’s the most complete list I’ve found.
I’ll let you know if I find any mistakes.

  2. Appreciate the comment, thanks. I’ll make any amendments for genuine mistakes.

  3. Hey ‘iMaker’

Thanks soooo much, sorted my problem (same as you had) in 2 mins flat!

    Warm Regards
    Graham

  4. You’re very welcome Graham, thanks for letting me know.

  5. Thank you very much, useful to have

  6. Thanks Alan D, glad you found it useful

  7. Fantastic! Thank you. At last someone has put something together that is searchable and useable. Well done and thank you for sharing it with us.

  8. Thank you Kate, much appreciated.

  9. Perfect – exactly what I was after. Thanks

  10. ooops, you’ve missed greater machester, in existance for 38 years

  11. How did I miss that? Thanks for the heads up Marc, Greater Manchester added.

  12. Thanks so much for the list, it’s just we we’re looking for.

    regards
    Linda

  13. westlothian is not on the list

  14. tom – thank you, I’ve added it to the list.

  15. Excellent!

I do find it disappointing that the internet with vast amounts of info yet most of it can be totally useless and inconsistent but it’s great to see that there is a bit of update to date content on this site…

Many thanks, solved a problem with minimal effort.

    Rob.

  16. Well done, a great list.

    Londonderry?

  17. A very useful list, thanks

  18. Great list, I will use it on my directory. Had a hard time finding a good proper list.

  19. Good list – best I’ve seen so far, but as the Government keep moving things around, Linolcshire’s northern area that was known as Lindsey became South Humberside. Humberside thankfully was kicked out again but Lincolnshire was split, so we now also have North Lincolnshire and if I’m not mistaken, North East Lincolnshire.

I love the way that Yorkshire is now split into 4 Ridings from the original 3 – when “Riding” is an old word meaning “A Third” (1/3)

    Keep up the good work.

  20. Thanks Tim, appreciate your comment, but I’ve no idea whether you mean the list should be updated.

  21. Strathclyde does not exist any more. North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire and other counties now exist.

  22. Hi Chris
    Thanks, really helpful.
Strathclyde now removed and the following added to the list:

    Argyll and Bute
    East Ayrshire
    East Dunbartonshire
    East Renfrewshire
    Glasgow City (created as Glasgow)
    Inverclyde
    North Ayrshire
    North Lanarkshire
    Renfrewshire
    South Ayrshire
    South Lanarkshire
    Dumbarton and Clydebank

  23. Thank you! Made my current project sooo much easier!

  24. Glad to hear it Jo

  25. Thanks for the list :-)

Northern Ireland is officially part of the UK. There are 6 counties as follows:

    Antrim
    Armagh
    Down
    Fermanagh
    Londonderry
    Tyrone

  26. Thanks Mark, appreciate you taking the trouble, but I believe you will find them already listed under the “full title” of County Antrim, County Armagh, etc.

  27. Cleveland is missing. It’s actually been renamed to Redcar & Cleveland now

  28. Many thanks, very helpful :-)

  29. Many thanks for this
I too, am surprised how difficult it is to find a definitive list.

Can anybody clarify if Middlesex is a county? I seems to be left of a lot of lists.

    Cheers,
    John

  30. Hi John
Middlesex isn’t a county any longer but falls within Greater London. However it is still used in postal addresses – so it’s back in the list!

    Thanks for asking

  31. Brilliant! Thank you very much, exactly what I was looking for!

  32. Sorry – but you’ve missed County Fermanagh … you know… the SIX counties of Northern Ireland {:0)

  33. Further to my last comment – I know that County Fermanagh was noted in another comment BUT it wasn’t in the file under ‘County Fermanagh’ – I’ve just noticed that is is in the file but listed as ‘Fermanagh’ – it needs to be listed with the other 5 counties as ‘County Fermanagh’.
    Sorry to be picky!

  34. Hi Russell
    Thanks for your support

  35. Hello Rae
Thanks for your contribution. I’ve updated the list.

  36. Excellent, thank you.
Have used this list for orders on my site.
Just noticed though, the download list isn’t up to date with the view online list!

    Highly appreciated

  37. Hi Leigh
Glad it’s appreciated. I can’t see any differences in versions, what do you see that I don’t?

  38. Cool, thanks for sharing the list!

  39. Hi,

Thanks for the list. I’ve added Durham to it but otherwise used it as is.

    Cheers!

  40. Hi Chris

  42. Thanks for the thought Noel.
Most of those in the list are already included in the main counties list but I’m not quite sure if the missing few are used as counties in postal addresses so i haven’t added them.

  43. Many thanks for creating this list, saved a lot of hunting around on the post office website to get it.

  44. Spot on. The internet is full of sites listing the states of the USA but not the UK Counties. Someone asked me if I could name the States of the USA. Personally, as a UK citizen I would have thought we should be able to list the UK counties more readily. With your kind assistance I soon will be able to.

  45. Thanks for the list – just what I wanted – perfect – no fuss service.
